Mohammed Shahabuddin has been sworn in as the 22nd President of Republic of Bangladesh

Mohammed Shahabuddin has been sworn in as the 22nd president of Bangladesh in a brief 10-minute oath-taking ceremony at the Bangabhaban Darbar Hall. The ceremony was conducted by Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and attended by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, the new president’s wife Rebecca Sultana, and the departing president’s wife Rashida Khanam.

Born in Pabna in 1949, Shahabuddin was an active member of the Pabna District Chhatra League, the Awami League’s student affiliate, in his early days. After the 1971 Liberation War, he achieved his LLB degree from Rajshahi University in 1975 after completing his MSc at the same university. Shahabuddin joined the BCS judicial cadre in 1982 and retired as a district and sessions judge in 2006 after serving in various capacities in the judiciary for 25 years.

The new president was the general secretary of Pabna Edward College unit of Chhatra League, president of Pabna District Chhatra League and Jubo League later also. He was the joint secretary of Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League of the district unit and publicity secretary of Awami League district unit. Shahabuddin was also involved in journalism and a good number of articles were also published in different vernaculars.

As the Anti-Corruption Commissioner of Bangladesh, Md Shahabuddin proved his deep firmness in Padma Bridge project. He also served as the Chairman of the Judicial Commission.

After the war, Mr. Shahabuddin became a prominent politician and served as a member of parliament for several terms. He also held various ministerial positions in the government.

His election as the president of Bangladesh has been welcomed by many, who see him as a symbol of the country’s struggle for independence and its progress since then. In his acceptance speech, President Shahabuddin pledged to work for the welfare of the people of Bangladesh and to uphold the country’s democratic values.

The presidency in Bangladesh is an important position that represents the nation both domestically and internationally. It is expected that he will use his experience and leadership skills to work towards greater economic development and social progress, while also addressing issues such as poverty, corruption, and climate change.
